March 2020
In Italy doctors are selecting those who will be given the dwindling supply of respirators. The young and those most likely to survive are being selected to live.
The elderly are expendable.
Spring break is upon us and Florida beaches are once again crowded. The young are not worried about the virus. And they are not interested in doing anything to help stop the spread.
Early on…Florida has done nothing to stop people from meeting together. The governor has left it up to people to make their own decisions.
A week later…the governor finally closes the beaches but the restaurants remain open.
And another week goes by…The governor has asked the President to declare Florida a national disaster area.
The House and Senate have voted on the stimulus package to save people’s jobs, or at least their paychecks. People are not having to pay their bills, car loans are deferred, mortgages can be put off, education loans have dropped to 0% interest. A great idea, but you can kind of see where that is going…
The House refuses to ok the Senate stimulus package. There are 5 (Republican) members of the House in self-quarantine with the virus. They can’t vote so the Democrats are taking advantage of that. They want concessions and funding for their pet projects that have nothing to do with the pandemic. For example…several million dollars to fund the Kennedy Performing Arts Center in Washington.
Come on people…this is like having a pack of teenagers… partying on the beach as they watch the approaching hurricane. Our industrialized food system has undermined the health of our society and left the drug-dependent elderly with compromised immune systems, unable to fight this virus; our industrialized education system has torn families apart and undermined parental authority, leaving our youth to wallow in their own self-interest; schools have been closed because there is no need to take the standardized tests since the schools will be getting the money from the government anyway; and our industrialized healthcare system seems to be making leaps and bounds toward controlling the problem, except the healthcare workers in the trenches aren’t seeing it…
Trump is heading up the cheer for what a wonderful job everyone is doing…coming together to fight and solve this problem. Bills are getting approved and signed at an unprecedented rate…
But wait…isn’t this how it’s supposed to be anyway?
